Artist Statement

A native of Louisiana, I have lived and worked in New Orleans since 1960. I am a retired lawyer pursuing my passion—painting---full-time.

I have been a figurative painter since I first picked up a paintbrush. For many years my subjects were solely men and women with features that interested me—gritty folks I called my hardscrabble heroes, my soul portraits. But eventually my subject matter migrated to the animal world. I became fascinated with the way animals share with us humans so many traits—pride, sadness, strength, humor, desperation, loyalty, boredom, anxiety, calm reflection, tension, and joy, to name a few. I try to capture these emotions in my paintings.

Victor Hugo once said that “animals are nothing but the portrayal of our virtues and vices made manifest to our eyes, the visible reflections of our souls.” This is a rather egocentric view, but I understand where he was coming from. We do see in the animal world certain characteristics, attitudes and feelings that mirror our own. I try to discover and portray these traits in the animals I paint.

Animals add to our quality of life. Whether it is the comfort and companionship of owning a pet or the exhilaration of spotting a bear or elk in the wilderness, our lives are richer and more joyful because of these creatures. Chief Seattle summed it up when he wrote:

"What is man without the beasts? If all the beasts were gone, man would die from a great loneliness of spirit. For whatever happens to the beasts, soon happens to man. All things are connected."

I am in the process of self-publishing my fourth of animal paintings and limericks about those animals. They are meant to be children’s books, but adults seem to enjoy them also.
